A 3-Day UK Road Trip Itinerary: Lochs, Forests & Cosy Stops

Not every winter getaway needs a plane ticket. Some of the best travel experiences happen closer to home — especially when the main goal is simple: good roads, great views, and time to properly switch off.

After our West Coast of Scotland shoot trip, we wanted to share a UK road trip itinerary inspired by the same kind of travel — lochs, forests, pull-over viewpoints, and cosy stops that make the journey feel as good as the destination.

This is a 3-day route built for slow travel and proper scenery.

Day 1: Start the journey

Day 1 should always be about leaving properly. Start early, pack the car the night before, and plan a first stop within the first 90 minutes so the trip begins with ease.

For UK road trips, the best bags are the ones that stay practical from car boot to café stop. We always travel with our Naia Tote Bag within reach — it’s ideal for snacks, layers, chargers and all the bits you want easy access to while travelling.

Aim to arrive at your base before dark so you can settle in, take a walk, and properly switch into travel mode.

Day 2: Scenic drives + viewpoints

Day 2 is your travel day. Not in the sense of getting somewhere fast, but in the sense of being on the move all day.

Pick a loop route rather than driving out and back. Build it around a few viewpoint stops, a short walk, and one “cosy reward” stop like a pub lunch or café.

This is also the day to get the photos — the roadside moments, the big skies, the travel details that make you feel like you’ve gone further than you actually have.

And if you’re doing an overnight or travelling with heavier layers (especially in winter), having one reliable bag that holds everything makes the trip feel much easier. Our Bodhi Nomad is designed for exactly this kind of travel.

Day 3: Slow morning, then home

A road trip always ends well when you don’t sprint out the door. Keep the last morning slow, pack up calmly, and leave space for one final unexpected stop.

This is also where a great wash bag becomes essential (especially if you’re freshening up on the go). Our Mila Washbags keeps the “travel chaos” contained and makes packing up quick.
